FF: Mobile App

Case Study

01

Designing Faraday Future’s EV App.

Project Overview

02

Faraday Future needed to redesign its app to enhance the experience for its flagship vehicle. The existing app lacked essential features like EV charger locators and route planning, leading to the inclusion of several new 0-to-1 features and overall UI quality improvements.

Project Breakdown

Project Goals

The project aimed to integrate the app with the vehicle’s digital ecosystem, delivering key experiences directly to users and helping them avoid potential pain points.

Design Solutions

Remote Door Controls
The coach doors, designed without traditional handles, required an app feature for remote control, including via wearables, allowing users to access the vehicle from a distance.

Mobile Charging Controls
Charging levels needed to be easily readable at a glance and quickly adjustable, as this is a high-priority feature for users.

Vehicle TV Controls
The TV experience is key for passengers, so the entry point had to be intuitive and easy to navigate with the companion app, requiring no learning curve.

Autonomous Driving Controls
Enabling ADAS-supported self-driving features through the companion app.

Design System Setup
The design system is key to a great user experience, enabling speed and consistency. I created the Figma framework, which was later adopted by the entire design and engineering team.

Design Process

01

Product Feature Discovery

Through workshops exploring "what if" scenarios, following design trends, and conducting user interviews, we identified pain points, feature ideas, and key challenges. Building on these findings, I led collaborative team exercises to brainstorm and refine the feature sets and optimal behaviors essential for the mobile app experience.

We have organized features in alignment with the engineering team, following feasibility and a impact matrix identifying the value and effort for each app feature.

02

User Interviews

Along with our PM, I spent several weeks interviewing co-creators and early adopters of the FF91 to uncover pain points and better understand how they use the companion app.

03

Userflows

I’ve guided and established user flows for the companion app to integrate new features without disrupting the existing experience. The goal was to maintain a smooth flow for current users while introducing intuitive ways to interact with new features based on user needs and insights.

04

Ideation

I’ve led sketching exercises to define and visualize our list of new features. This ideation process enabled rapid visualizations and refinements, ensuring the introduced features were functional, user-friendly, and could be easily viewed as flows.

05

Prototyping and Testing

I created and led the development of interactive wireframes, which were used for usability testing of key app features we needed to finalize. This made it easy to evaluate and iterate the design from there.

I led the development of an autonomous ride-sharing concept to create a seamless app that allows vehicle owners to integrate their autonomous cars into a fleet. The project delivered an end-to-end experience, expanding the potential of fully autonomous features in the ride-sharing market.

I leveraged analytics to validate design decisions, prioritize key components based on user focus, and eliminate pain points.

I leveraged analytics to inform decisions, establish screen consistency, and define zones for multi-window behavior and persistent elements.

06

Continued Design Iteration

Design iterations were driven by ongoing feedback from active users, self-imposed testing that revealed further improvement areas, and continuous input from stakeholders. This collaborative approach ensured the features evolved to meet user needs effectively while aligning with stakeholder expectations. We have performed A/B testing on the design performance to ensure improvements.

Project Impact

Designed a mobile companion app that seamlessly integrates with the EV’s digital ecosystem, delivering key product experiences directly to users. This solution enhanced user engagement by 35% and reduced potential pain points, improving overall user satisfaction and driving a 40% increase in app adoption rates.
